TONTON Soriba Sylla - Vikend djembe radionica 29-30.10.2011
Vikend Djembe Radionica
TONTON
SORIBA SYLLA
29-30.10.2011
Satnica: subota i nedjelja: 11-15.30 sati
Cijena: 550 kn/75 €
Mjesto: bit će naknadno utvrđeno (najvjerojatnije Češki dom)

Do You Speak Djembe?
How about taking part in this fantastic fusion of classical music and ancestral African drumming?
“Each of you gets an African drum and you all take part in a unique three-way performance.
A really incredible happening”
Philippe Fournier, with his Orchestre Symphonique Lyonnais, and Doug Manuel, with his team of African musicians, carry the audience right into the heart of it all, and everyone ‘speaks Djembe together’.
Through Dominante and Sewa Beats, these two artists have already forged themselves solid reputations as architects of creative musical events.
Do You Speak Djembe? breaks down all barriers.
Performers and audience come together, in a language and a world of their own.
Discover this exceptional experience of communicating through music.
Featuring the maestro kora player Seckou Keita, this incredible show brings together the very best of this generation’s West African and great European musicians.
Imagine... Imagine a fusion ... African rhythms ... Western harmonies ... A unique creation ... Two chefs d’orchestre ... A show without spectators ... Where the public becomes actor ...

Mamady Keita & Sewa Kan - Hakili
It was in December 2007 when Mamady first shared his desire to celebrate, as he should, his 50 years of musical career. The most beautiful way to celebrate this event would be together with his fans during a European concert tour in the summer of 2009.
For this project, Mamady wanted by his side his mythic group Sewa Kan, his bodyguards, among them Babara Bangoura on djembe, Souleymane Camara on djembe, Cece Koly on sangban, Youssouf Traore on dunumba, Mama Adama Camara as dancer, Bebey Youla as singer and dancer, and Monette Marino-Keita on kenkeni.
But in his head he had already planted the seed of a much more ambitious performance for which he wanted to evolve his music beyond just the percussion with a palette of musicians much larger.
His choice to bring in Djelimady Kouyate on balafon, Prince Diabate on kora, Baba Toure on djembe, Kandet Kouyate on vocals and the cherry on top, Manu Hermia on saxophone and flute, the only European musician in this whole adventure.

Čak i ako je nešto teži, čak i ako zahtijeva fizičku snagu da bi se svirao, to je zabavno! Kad bi trebalo ljude rasplakati, ne bi vrijedilo nikakvog truda!“

Bolokada Conde - One Of The Malinke's Famous African Drummers
Performances of African drummers like Bolokada Conde suddenly let you realize how complex djembe rhythms really are. At first, they may even seem chaotic to an untrained ear. But as you familiarize yourself with these foreign sounds, they evolve into veritable rhythmic poetry!
Bolokada has made a name for himself by mastering the traditional rhythms of the Malinke ethnic group and by showcasing them to the rest of the world.
Malinke Djembe Drummer The mastery in itself is no small achievement: The Malinke use several different percussion instruments that play separate beats and blend into one rhythm.
Each rhythm has a different history, origin and use. Some pieces may be played at weddings, while others may be for war dances or welcoming young boys into manhood.
Bolokada was recognized as a prodigy at a very young age and became a sensation in the Sankaran region of Guinea, West Africa. He was given the title of master folklorist and was sought out to play the djembe at all the major village celebrations in his area.
After some years, Bolokada joined the famous Les Percussion du Guinée as their lead drummer. This allowed him to tour the world and showcase his talent and culture in major venues. He was since then branded as one of the most exciting, captivating and dynamic djembe players alive.
Bolokada produced two CDs entitled Morowaya and Sankaran.
Since 2004, he has been teaching and performing in the United States and Europe. He is the musical director for groups like the Ballet Waraba (North Carolina) and the Ballet Wassa-Wassa (Santa Cruz), among many others.
His African drumming classes and workshops are always packed. Students consider them more than worth the tuition price and a three-hour commute. So be sure to sign up if he comes to your area!
It definitely is an experience to see Bolokada Conde in action on stage! The rhythms that he beats out of his djembe are fantastic. But it's his personality, his facial expressions and his passion for the drums that make the show extraordinary!

Mamady Keita - Grandmaster of the djembe, World’s most famous djembe Master
Mamady Keita was born in 1950 in Balandugu, a small village in Guinea, West Africa, near the border of Mali. Even before his birth his mother was told that his name would travel beyond Balandugu, beyond Guinea and beyond all of Africa. She did not know what that meant until Mamady was born and before he could even walk he would turn over anything that looked like a bowl and he would start hitting it like a drum. It was from that point on that his parents knew he was destined to be a djembe player and gave him the nickname nankama, born for it, and brought him to study with the Master Drummer of his village, Karinkadjan Konde.
In 1957, Mamady was initiated into the secrets of the djembe and to the history of his people, the Mandingue. In 1963, he was taken to perform in the regional ballet, about 150 km from his home and in 1964, he was taken 2000 km away to the capital city Conakry where the President of Guinea, Sekou Toure was working with Harry Belafonte to produce the National Ballet of Guinea, Ballet National Djoliba. He was one of 50 percussionists who auditioned during 9 months of training and in the end was one of the final 5 who made it into the Ballet. At only 14 years of age, Mamady was by far the youngest member of the National Ballet. That same year he starred in the Harry Belafonte film, Africa Dance.
Mamady remained in the National Ballet until 1986, during which time he won gold medals in many International and Pan-African Festivals and was also named Best African Drummer. He went on to become the djembe soloist and lead drummer of Ballet Djoliba and in 1979 was named as Artistic Director. He created many of the musical repertoires used in the Ballets and trained many of the worlds top djembe players.
In 1986, Mamady decided to make his personal mark in the world by breaking out of the Ballet and establishing himself as an independent drummer. He moved to the Ivory Coast where he joined Souleymane Kolis group Koteba and performed next to such renowned African stars as Toure‚ Kunda of Senegal, and Mory Kante of Guinea. During his stay in Ivory Coast, Mamady starred in another movie, titled La Vie Platine, and also wrote and recorded the entire sound track.
When Mamady’s name began to travel beyond West Africa, a group of percussionists in Belgium decided to bring him into Europe to teach and perform. That happened in 1988 with a non-profit organization called Zig-Zag. In cooperation, Mamady helped open a school of percussion which they called Repercussions, and later that same year, Mamady established his own performance ensemble, Sewa Kan. The name refers to a Malinke proverb which says Without music there is no joy, but without joy there is no music.
In 1991, Mamady decided it was time to go his own way and he established his own percussion school which he called Tam Tam Mandingue, drums of the Manding. Over the 20 years that bring us up to the present year 2011, Mamady produced 11 cds, 8 instructional video/DVDs, a book (Mamady Keita: A Life For the Djembe), several documentary films (including internationally acclaimed Djembefola, by Laurent Chevalier), and extended his percussion school to include 18 branches across the globe (France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Japan, USA, Israel). Each year Mamady travels to these countries to teach workshops and perform with Sewa Kan.
Mamady also brings students to Guinea every winter or to mini-Guinea in CA, to participate in a 3 week drum camp at his house in Conakry. He currently resides with his wife Monette Marino Keita and daughter Nasira in San Diego, California.

Famoudou Konaté - Maître du Djembe, Master of the Malinke Djembe Tradition
Famoudou Konaté is one of only a handful of initiated Masters of the Malinké drumming tradition. In over 45 years of tours and performances as Guinea's leading djembefola, he has elevated the djembe orchestra from its traditional roots to worldwide popularity.
Among Guinean drummers, he is universally recognized for his unsurpassed knowledge of the repertoire of the Malinké people, the creators of the djembe and dunun drums and its core tradition. A true, world renown virtuoso, Famoudou is universally respected as one of the world’s premiere Djembe Drum Masters. He has dedicated his life to performing and preserving the music of his people, helping to elevate the djembe orchestra from its traditional roots to worldwide popularity.
Famoudou was born in 1940 in Sangbarala, a village in the Hamanah region of Upper Guinea. Hamanah is the Malinké heartland in Guinea, and is also the birthplace of the Dundunba family of rhythms which are Famoudou's specialty. A percussive prodigy, he was drumming in community festivals and ceremonies by age eight, and was in demand throughout the region as a djembefola by the age of fourteen.
Recruited into Guinea's Les Ballets Africains in 1959, he was Lead Djembe Drummer for Les Ballets until 1985, performing with astounding virtuosity and creating many of the musical arrangements now common in ballets and performance groups world-wide. Famoudou toured the world performing to acclaim for 26 years, establishing Les Ballets as West Africa's foremost performing company.
Since 1986, he has taught and performed annually in Europe, instilling a generation of European djembe drummers with an extraordinary level of training, while teaching with thoroughness, patience and humor. His pioneering contributions were recognized in 1996 with an Honorary Professorship in African Musical Education and Practice from the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Since 2000, he has also taught annually in North America, Japan, Israel, and, of course, West Africa.
Famoudou has recorded 8 classic djembe CDs; has co-authored a book on the drum music of the Malinké people; and has been guest soloist on 2 CDs and in 2 films with Mamady Keïta. Since leaving Les Ballets, he has directed The Famoudou Konaté Ensemble and the groups Hamanah Diara, Hamanah Dan Ba and Hamana Föli Kan. He is also a key member of the group Mögöbalu (the Masters), alongside dundunfola Daouda Kourouma and Master Drummer Mamady Keïta.
He is a Master Teacher, working across cultures, languages and skill levels to assist students with an approachable, patient and flexible teaching style. Famoudou’s passion for the music infuses every workshop. In each session, he effectively communicates a wealth of knowledge and drumming experience through his hands, his heart and his warm sense of humor. Everyone benefits from hands-on, personal contact with Famoudou throughout the workshop experience.
