Baba Kone

Baba Kone began his musical career in his home country of Burkina Faso aged seven, learning from his family, traditional storytellers and musicians in the Mandinka tradition, known as Jeli or griots. Together they played at weddings, celebrations, and ceremonies. At thirteen he was invited to join the internationally touring Burkina Faso Ballet Nationale as a percussionist with his father. “I used to be with all the best players in my country, and so I got to hear everybody’s hands.” At eighteen he formed his own award winning group, Yerelon, with local musicians from other families. Now, he is dancer and musical leader of two London based groups, Jeli Masa and Malinke.
